Housed in SDSU's Aztec Center, the Backdoor began as a folk-music venue in the early 1970s before expanding to include concerts – in a spare, intimate setting – by Patti Smith, Tom Waits, the Talking Heads, Bush, Jane's Addiction, Eddie Vedder's pre-Pearl Jam band Bad Radio, and others.
